TRA Heads 14th Meeting for Arab Spectrum Management Group

The United Arab Emirates has participated in the 14th Arab Spectrum Management Group (ASMG) that was commenced from 29/11/2010 till 2/12/20210. The event which took place in Lebanon was hosted by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority under the patronage of His Excellency Charbel Nahas, Minister of Telecommunications. The UAE participation was represented by a distinguished delegation headed by Engineer Tariq Al-Awadi, Executive Director of the Spectrum Management and International Affairs in Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), as well as Engineer Nasser Bin Hammad, Senior Manager International Affairs at the TRA, Delegation Vice President, in addition to members from both, governmental and non-governmental entities.

Inaugurated on 29/11/2010 by His Excellency Charbel Nahas, Minister of Telecommunications, the importance of this Meeting lies in the fact that it precedes the Conference Preparatory Meeting (CPM) which is set to take place at the headquarters of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in Genève on February 2011 as a preparatory conference for the 2012 Radio communication Conference (WRC-12). The 14th Meeting witnessed the participation of 15 Arab countries, each representing its own telecommunications regulatory authority. The conference also witnessed the partaking of Spectrum Management Specialists and representatives from Arab League at the Cairo and The telecommunications office in Bahrain who contributed as well to liaise the Arab stance and discuss the positions in regards to the Spectrum Management in general, as well as the agenda items of the 2012 Radio communications Conference, in particular to decide on the best methods to satisfy each of the WRC-12 agenda items..

His Excellency Mohamed Nasser Al Ghanim, Director General of TRA, highlighted the importance of the Meeting stating: “We have to sanction the Arab coordination and strive to foster cooperation and solidarity among the neighboring Arab countries in the fields of Spectrum Management, let alone liaising Arab stance in international conferences dedicated to guarantee the efficiency of utilizing the full scope of  the Spectrum Management resources, as well as ensuring the required security for IT networks and its bundle of services.

In this regard, Engineer Tariq Al Awadi, President of the conference said: “This Meeting is of high importance since it is essential to coordinate the Arab stance and unify thoughts on agenda items of the upcoming Radio communications Conference WRC-12, which involves an assortment of vital and essential Telecom Wireless services such as aviation services, fixed and mobile services, broadcasting and fixed satellite services, in addition to other services that require the combined team efforts and continuous coordination to unify visions and stances, thus reaching the most efficient solutions and techniques oriented to guarantee complete protection to the wireless services of today and tomorrow, across the various scopes of Spectrum Management in the Arab world.

The Meeting was concluded with a series of information slides on the fourth day (2/12/2010) to exchange perceptions and thoughts with a number of operators and private sector members. Al Thurayya and YahSat alongside other US groups have expressed their viewpoints towards some of the articles of the Spectrum Management Agenda that was attended by the team members who enjoyed its benefits in terms of exchanging viewpoints with the other side. The UAE delegation expressed their gratitude and appreciation to the hosting Telecommunication Regulatory in Lebanon; thanking them for all the efforts they have invested to ensure a flawless conference management, as well as a generous hospitality and warm welcoming which facilitated the mission of the team.
