Proceeding from its continuous efforts to achieve its strategy of supporting all activities that contribute in promoting the development of the telecommunications and information systems sector in the UAE, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) sponsored the conference and exhibition of the Middle East Communications (MECOM) 2011, which was held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre during 16 -18 May 2011.

H.E. Mr. Majed Al Mesmar, Deputy Director General, inaugurated the conference which witnessed this year an increased participation of leading companies working in the field of telecommunications and technology in the Middle East and the world, in a clear reference to the increasing importance of this exhibition, as well as highlighting the vital role played by the UAE in the telecommunications sector, and the ideal example provided by it in this sector throughout the Middle East and the world.

In his opening address, Mr. Al Mesmar said: “MECOM and other events organized by the UAE are clear examples of the pioneer role played by the Emirates in the telecommunications sector in our region and the world. They embody our continued commitment to providing the best services in the telecommunications sector to all users and stakeholders in this field."

"There is no doubt that we have achieved leaping strides in the field of constructing and developing the infrastructure of the telecommunications sector, and this have enabled us to reach to further advanced stages in the levels of communications and information services which we offer, and which we continuously strive to update to the highest possible levels through the TRA.” He added.

Al Mesmar further explained: “The organization of such events must continue due to the benefits we derive from our exchange of information and experience between the different telecommunication sectors in our countries, in order to reach the optimal formulas that enable us to provide the best telecommunications services at affordable and reasonable rates that suit all users, and enable them to make advantage and benefit from the enormous potentials offered to us by the telecommunications and information revolution witnessed by the world today.”

Commenting on the importance and necessity of a high level telecommunications sector in the UAE, H.E. the Deputy Director-General said: “As a multi-national country that hosts dozens of nationalities from all around the world, the role of our telecommunications sector, which is supervised and managed by the TRA, is not limited to providing the best services in the domestic market, it goes beyond that to create the infrastructure and resources which will help telecommunication operators to achieve the highest levels of satisfaction among residents while they communicate with their families and beloved ones at their home countries, in order to keep them connected and reduce to the maximum degree possible the distances between them."

Concluding, H.E Majed Al Mesmar, TRA Deputy Director General, expressed his gratitude to the participants for coming to the UAE to attend the event, and wished them all the success, and a productive outcome. He also expressed his deepest wishes to them of a comfortable and joyful stay in the UAE.
