The UAE National WSIS Committee launched the UAE National WSIS Report during its participation in the current WSIS Forum 2011 at the ITU headquarters in Geneva. The report was launched on Tuesday, May 17, followed by a country workshop to shed more light on efforts to implement WSIS Action Lines in the United Arab Emirates. The first day of the summit also witnessed the participation of the Abu Dhabi Systems and Information Centre (ADSIC), with a presentation on the e-Government of the emirate.

H.E. Mohamed Nasser Al Ghanim, TRA Director General, delivered a speech on the occasion of launching the report. In his speech, Al Ghanim highlighted the UAE efforts to achieve the WSIS goals. He also pointed to the vital role that the UAE National WSIS Committee plays in creating an ambitious plan to fulfill WSIS recommendations before 2015.
“The UAE National WSIS Report contains all information pertaining to our WSIS activities since we started,” said Mohamed Nasser Al Ghanim, TRA director General. “It is an important reference that documents every step we have made in our journey to achieve WSIS goals. The report will provide all participant delegations with a background of our achievements. On this occasion I would like to extend my appreciation to all the members of the UAE National WSIS Committee, the Telecommunication Regulatory Authority, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the General Information Authority, and the Emirates Competitiveness Council for the efforts they have made.”
Abu Dhabi e-government programme and the 2030 VisionADSIC participated in the events of the first day of the summit with a presentation displayed by Mr. Mohammed Al Khamiri, Director of Strategy and Planning, on e-Government that elaborated on the vision of the programme which is in consistent with the “Abu Dhabi 2030” vision, and with the agenda of the general policy of the Abu Dhabi government. The presentation also discussed the development of the technology sector, the infrastructure and e-services of the Emirate, with historic references to the establishment of the center, the vision of the e-Government with its strategy and its contents and how it derived and adopted the work frame (environment, readiness and use) from the World Economic Forum.
The presentation also referred to the long term implemented or ongoing economic projects, within the frame work mentioned above, along with examples on projects which are implemented with government agencies and with the partnership of the private sector such as: the location data programme, e-laws, information security programme, Abu Dhabi e-network, the “800555” call center, Abu Dhabi Government portal and Abu Dhabi Functions.
Al Khumairi concluded by speaking on the status enjoyed by Abu Dhabi in the global indicators including the e-readiness indicator, the financial and non-financial revenues of the project, the fruitful results of cooperating with governmental agencies and the future vision of the Abu Dhabi e-Government.
The Emirati delegation hosted a reception on Monday, May 16, attended by His Excellency the Secretary-General of ITU Dr. Hamadoun Toure, in addition to many distinguished guests and representatives of other organizations in the UN. The reception was the perfect opportunity to socialize and network with other guests, informing them about the UAE as well as the country’s ICT sector and WSIS achievements.
The United Arab Emirates National WSIS Report also includes the UAE Government Strategy. This strategy will ensure that local governments are acting according to guidelines that place citizens as their top priority. The strategy will also ensure that local governments act in an accountable, effective and flexible manner and always looking forward to a better future.
